“I am a graduate student pursuing a Master of Science in Sustainability at the University of South Dakota (expected graduation May 2027). My academic and professional journey is rooted in environmental science, sustainable agriculture, and the growing field of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). Originally from Kenya, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Environment and Natural Resource Management (Environmental Science Option) from Africa Nazarene University in 2022. I have hands-on experience in sustainable farming as the founder and co-manager of Kalamu Farm Production in Kitui County, where I implement solar-powered drip irrigation and water-efficient practices to improve productivity and climate resilience. My background also includes environmental data collection, analysis, and reporting through various roles with government agencies and research projects in Kenya. This past spring semester, I had the opportunity to work under the TRICEA grant-funded hydroponics project in the Department of Sustainability & Environment. I was under the supervision of Dr. Meghann Jarchow and Glen Marshall. Working alongside my teammate Faith Nderitu, we successfully set up and managed two hydroponic systems: a Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) system for white and red Russian kale, and an experimental vertical tower for lettuce, bok choy, and spinach. The project produced fresh produce for the department and created valuable hands-on learning experiences in sustainable food production. I am particularly passionate about precision agriculture, GIS applications, and using data-driven approaches to advance food security and environmental sustainability. I look forward to continuing work that bridges practical agriculture with innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.”
